Having watched the recent Republican Debates I actually have to say I was impressed with Congressman Ron Paul. Congressman Paul came across as a man of courage and one who really had a handle on the facts. Especially in the areas when it came to our total irresponsible federal spending that has created the greatest national debt ever that his own party has been responsible for and not to mention the Iraq War. Congressman Paul, against the fervor of the majority of Republicans and Democrats to give Bush the authority to go to war in 2002, voted NO. He knew it would be a quagmire and stood by his principles.
Thank you Congressman Paul! Two of the most interesting points he brought up as to why we were attacked on 9-11 were the facts that we had US military bases in the Middle East with the one in Saudi Arabia being most offensive and the fact that the US had been bombing Iraq for over 10 years. As soon as he made his statement former Mayor Giuliani pounced on him and said that is the first time he ever heard that used as a reason for the attack and he reminded us again the he was the mayor when 9-11 happened. Yes we know you were Rudy not only that but you were also the one who put the city’s Command Center back into the World Trade Center after it was already attacked in 1993 which was after you were advised against sighting it there.
I want to know if Rudy will take some of the responsibility for losing the Command Center which added to the confusion and chaos on that tragic day. Well Mayor Rudy, if you plan on being the President you should have taken a little time to read the 9-11 Commission Report where it clearly discloses that Representative Paul’s statement was right. Not only that, but BBC News reported on April 29, 2003, that “Saudi Arabia is home to some of Islam’s holiest sites and the deployment of US Forces there was seen as a historic betrayal by many Islamists, notably Osama Bin Laden.” Guess what? If there was no sliver of truth to this, then tell me why Defense Secretary Rumsfeld moved out all our troops from Saudi Arabia in 2003?
The most comical thing was that after Rudy tried to attack Paul’s statement all the others wanted their thirty seconds to go after Paul too. This showed me that the rest didn’t have a clue either regarding some of the reasons 9-11 happened. The only reason that we have heard for over five years is that they hate our Freedom. No, they actually hate us more for being in their holy lands than because of our Freedoms. Lets not forget that most of the terrorists were Saudis and our misadventures in Iraq has created hundreds of thousand more. But besides the lack of knowledge of the facts, I found comments like Mitt Romney’s which he stated that he would, “Double the size Guantanamo!” Scary! Representative Tancredo when asked if we were attacked again what would he do?… and he replied, “I’m looking for Jack Bauer at that time!” I only hope Tancredo knows that Jack Bauer is a fictional character on the TV series 24. Very Scary! (Then again former Vice President Dan Quayle did go after Murphy Brown another fictional TV character.)
But the one I found the scariest was Duncan Hunter, who made overtures that if he was President he would immediately start bombing Iran. I know that November 2008 is a long way off but I truly believe that Americans are looking to not repeating the incompetence we have seen and will be making looking for someone that will understand the concept of diplomacy, fiscal responsibility and also go after the man that did attack us on 9-11.
